Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
