At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
